What results do my students achieve?

On average my students improve their GCSE maths grade by around 2 - 4 levels in around 3 months.

Some have gone from failing to a strong pass and others have gone from level 5/6 to achieving the top grades.

A typical first lesson includes:

Detailed assessment of how student is currently doing

An action plan on how to improve understanding and grade

Teaching topics in easy to grasp pieces

Ongoing lessons include:

In depth review and understanding of topics

Topics explained in different ways to ensure full understanding

Lots of exam practice and strategies to maximise marks

An enjoyable work schedule to ensure students are improving every day without stress

Coaching on how to stay motivated and consistent

A friendly approach to encouraging the student to work hard

Empathy and kindness to support the student in their studies

I approach tutoring as more of a coach and help my students to feel comfortable and supported throughout their maths journey.

I am happy to fully explain topics, as slowly or as quickly as needed, until my students understand everything and feel confident to move on.

I make sure that any gaps in their knowledge are filled in so that students can move on to the harder topics.

Every student is different and so I use a custom teaching approach for every student. My teaching strategies include:

  • Practising the basics and improving confidence with numbers

It's difficult to climb a ladder if the bottom rungs are missing.

Filling in any gaps and starting with a secure foundation is critical to getting a higher grade faster.

  • Learning how to investigate and problem solve

Maths has a lot of depth and the same question can be asked in different ways.

I show my students that if they learn how to enjoy investigating maths and work out how to problem solve, they will find any kind of question much easier.

  • Teach me and doing questions independantly

Sometimes I swap roles with my students and they teach me how to do a question/topic, this is great for seeing how much they have been paying attention!

The overall aim with my tuition is to create independent learners who prosper after the exams as well.

  • Daily Practice and regular tests to check progress

Success is found in our small daily habits.

    GCSE Maths is no different.

I coach my students to practice daily in a way they find enjoyable. They get used to doing tests so there are no more surprises in schools and by the time the real exams come round they feel much more confident.

  • Past Paper practice and exam technique

The reason most students do not achieve their target grade is lack of exam practice.

Its not the same as quizzes or textbook questions.

I do in depth past paper technique with my students and show them the patterns and tips that will help them know what to expect.

  • Going beyond the curriculum and aiming for mastery

Students are curious and the point of education should be to keep that curiosity and joy of learning alive.

I try to show my students the joy of maths itself so students are inspired to continue studying concepts and start looking further than just the exam.

FAQs

What’s with all the food?

Most maths blogs and textbooks are sooo boring.

One day, when I was writing a blog post on algebra, I asked myself ‘why would anyone read this, its dull algebra.’

So I thought I’d make it more fun with food. I changed the title to: “How to do equations faster than eating biscuits’ and the post went viral on reddit.

I found a way to make maths engaging and fun to read about.

Who am I?

My name is Zan (full name Zobia), I’ve worked in education for over 15 years. I used to teach robotics and maths in schools. When Covid happened and schools went into lockdown I decided to stick with online maths tuition and have helped lots of students to improve their maths grade. The life skills they gain by working with me helps them so much after their exams too.

Do you provide gcse maths tuition?

Yes, I am a KS3 and GCSE maths tutor, based in Leicester. I teach higher and foundation level. My students usually improve their grade by about 3 levels in 3 months. I help my students develop their confidence, reduce anxiety and show them how to develop study skills that they will use in their lives after gcses.

Can you do online maths lessons?

Yes, I can do one to one tuition online wherever you are, and face to face in some parts of Leicester. I will also be doing group tuition in 2024/2025 online and am currently making an online gcse maths course that students can do any time - watch this space.

I used to tutor through TutorHunt and Tutorful, my ratings on these platforms are 5 stars and 4.7 stars.

Is online maths tuition effective?

It depends.

I use very good resources and track all of the work my students are doing during the lesson and in between lessons.

My students learn how to motivate themselves to study and enjoy the process of making a plan and sticking to it.

They take responsibility for their learning and as a result are happy and less stressed when it comes to studying.

During the lessons I explain topics simply and clearly using interactive tools so that its as close an experience to a face to face lesson as possible.

We do regular past papers as well to track performance.

What is this all about?

Hi and welcome to GCSE Maths Hacks.

I’ve been a maths tutor for a long time and I noticed a few things:

Students are really good at maths if its explained the correct way.

Most students don’t realise how much they need to practice maths to get a good grade.

Most students can improve their grade by at least 3 levels if they are taught with kindness and empathy.

Students love my terrible jokes and understand the way I explain maths.

So, I put everything I was doing in my lessons into an online blog. I’m hoping to reach more students and help them get better grades in their exams.
